FootSkin Scale

Foot-Scale-pages.pngThe Young Townson FootSkin Scale for Diabetic Neuropathy, which has been written by Matthew Young, Consultant Diabetologist at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Editor of The Diabetic Foot Journal, and Mike Townson Podiatry Advisor to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Diabetes and Dean of Management Faculty of the UK Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, is to be launched on 18 June 2014.

The intention of this validated scale is to standardise and improve emollient prescribing in the Low Risk and High Risk Diabetic Foot. The scale allows the practitioner at each Annual Diabetic Foot Check to track skin changes and respond as required by NICE Guideline CG010 (and now by case law). It also helps to define what NICE Guideline CG010 means when it requires the NHS to provide "appropriate" skin care. The Authors have produced this scale with the intention of standardising and improving emollient prescribing with a view to reducing Diabetic Foot Ulcerations.

In the NHS in the UK we have many teams interested in rolling out the use of the scale to the GP Practices in their area and would welcome more Trusts joining these early adopters, both in the UK and Internationally.
